EXTENSION TO NORMAN CHURCH

The Church of St. John the Baptist in East Ayton is a delightful Grade II listed Norman church, situated at the fringe of the North York Moors National Park. However, the fixed pews and complete lack of facilities precluded modern Church activities. Under the enthusiastic leadership of the Rev. Ros Walser, the often talked about Meeting Room eventually became a reality. After a number of years of planning and fund raising, the project eventually came to fruition.  The small Victorian Vestry at the north side was dismantled, with some of the stone elements and embellishments being retained for re-use in the new Meeting Room. The new cruciform shaped Meeting Room is constructed of dressed stone under a slate roof, all carefully executed by local craftsmen. Internally, the new exposed trusses frame a beautiful space, and the serenity of this lovely Norman Church has been complimented by this sympathetic extension.
